The Ministry of the Interior has approved the establishment of a designated district for students and young people in the city. The district will include apartments of various sizes for rent, workspaces and common areas.
The municipality of Modi'in Maccabim Re'ut received permission by the Ministry of the Interior to tender an innovative project for the establishment of a district for students and young people in the city. The municipality has started preparing for the execution of the tender, which is another significant step in realizing the city's vision to improve community life, support the young population and make higher education more accessible.
Mayor Haim Bibas led the process about two years ago when the municipality began planning the district, to be built on lots adjacent to transportation square and the municipal pool. It will offer communal housing in a unique model alongside a campus for higher studies, resulting in a lively complex, which will fulfil the social, cultural, educational and community needs of the city's youth.
The project will be carried out using the BOT (Build, operate, transfer) system, in which the selected developer will build, develop and operate the district for a period of up to 25 years, at the end of which the property will be vested in the municipality. In addition, the project will be integrated into the entertainment and leisure complex of the new city center and will strengthen the connection to the local youth community.
The student quarter will include apartments of various sizes for rent: studio apartments, two- and three-room apartments with an area of 30 to 60 square meters, as well as workspaces and common areas such as a gym, laundry room and club for tenants. The project will also offer a commercial complex that will serve the residents of the district and its visitors, while meeting the needs of the young and in accordance with the growing demand in the city.
Simultaneously with the planning, the municipality, led by the Education, Learning and Entrepreneurship Division, began the process of locating academic institutions abroad with the aim of establishing a branch here in the city. The municipality stated that as part of this activity, contacts were made with several universities in Europe, but the process stopped with the outbreak of the war.
According to the plan, establishing a campus in the complex will provide a solution for higher education for the city's young people and will be a center of attraction for students from all over the country. The campus will be built in stages and will include classrooms and lectures, research spaces, offices and commercial areas, and will take into account future employment needs of the young people.
Mayor Haim Bibbs: "One of my goals as mayor is to establish a district intended for young students, which will allow attractive housing in a central location in the city with sane and predetermined prices, so that we can give the city's young people the opportunity to enjoy higher education close to home, community life and a variety of culture and leisure. The approval of the project and moving to the tender stage is an important and exciting step, and we continue the hard work to realize this vision. At the same time, we are holding meetings with academic bodies from Israel and abroad with the aim of establishing an academic institution or an academic branch here in the city."
