Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day

The eve of Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day will take place on Sunday 5th May 2024 and opens with two municipal ceremonies; at Ironi Bet ampitheather, with the participation of students of Ironi Aleph; and at Mor high school with the participation of the high school students.

At the end of the ceremonies, the film "One Soul" will be shown. An exciting drama based on a true story that was revealed only a few years ago, about Sir Nicholas Winton MBE, who arrives in Prague and is exposed to the plight of Jewish refugees who are trying to escape from the Nazi regime. As part of Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day events, "Animax Remembrance" will be shown for the first - animation and comics, some of which deal with commemorating the Holocaust and heroism and some with the memory and heroism of October 7th and the "Iron Swords" war.

The "Kavim Coevim" exhibition includes cariacatures of loss and grief following October 7, and will be on display at Beit Yad Lebanim until May 17, 2024. The exhibition is a group exhibition of the best illustrators in Israel and brings together a selection of works that have been published in newspapers and digital channels in recent months. Hasmonean Heritage Museum at 18:00 - Leah Balint's lecture on children who lost their identity: the story of Holocaust orphans from Poland. Free entry.
Beit Yad LaBanim at 21:00 - a meeting with the comic creator Gilad Slickter, who talks about processing the memory of the Holocaust in his work, after meeting with the brothers Niko and Rolf Kamp, who were hidden during the war in 13 different places. He adapted the meeting into an animation that won many awards. Entrance is free.

Monday 6th May at 10:00 - “Broken branches and branch knots” , at Beit Yad Lebanim. Screening of a group of Israeli animated films created by third generation Holocaust survivors. This animation collection consists mainly of contemporary films created by the third generation, directly touching memory, and thoughts of identity and identification with a war so far away. Among the films screened are "Broken Branches" by Ila Shrot, "A bit of space for tomorrow" by Raya Kress, which reproduces the writings of her grandmother, "Nyosha" by Yael Dekal and Liran Kepel, "Records from Munich" and "World War II third generation" by Elad Eisen, Gil Laron and Shahar Madmon.

At 10:00 there will be a meeting with Inbar Hutzen-Zelniker at the Moshe Shechter Public Library about the search for her family's roots during where she discovered an archive containing about 300 postcards sent by family members from the Theresienstadt camp to Berlin. Most of the postcards begin with the words - "Liebe Mutti " – My dear mother.

At 20:30 in the auditorium on 2 Marva Street, there will be a tribute event for a group of Holocaust survivors - Yosef Tomi Lapid, Efraim Kishon, Dosh, Ze'ev and Shmulik Katz. The story of the five Hungarian expatriates and Holocaust survivors, satirists who had a strong influence on culture and media in Israel. The program will feature an illustrated overview of each of the personalities. Ticket price - NIS 20.

On Tuesday 7 May at 10:00 at the Moshe Schechter Public Library there will be an activity based on the personal belongings of children who lived during the Holocaust and at the end of the war. The activity is intended for 5th graders and up.
